Masato Suzuki (1981) is een bijzonder begaafd Japans organist, klavecinist, pianist, componist en dirigent. Hij is gespecialiseerd in zowel oude als hedendaagse muziek. Al sinds jaren geeft hij vele concerten in binnen- en buitenland. Tijdens dit concert zal Masato Suzuki op het Fokker-orgel oude en nieuwe muziek ten gehore brengen in de middentoonstemming en in de 31-toonsstemming, dat reeds in 1691 werd beschreven door de beroemde Nederlandse natuurkundige Christiaan Huygens. Speciaal voor dit programma en voor Masato Suzuki heeft de jonge componist Brendan Faegre een nieuw werk voor Fokker-orgel gecomponeerd, getiteld Novel Forces, waarin hij (door middel van microtonen) nieuw leven blaast in de tonale structuren van de late Barok.
Naast een werk van Sweelinck klinkt er ook werk van drie Spaanse componisten uit voornamelijk het begin van de 17de eeuw, waarvan Francisco Corea de Arauxo de meest vooraanstaande is aangzien hij de overgang weerspiegelt van de Spaanse Renaissance naar de Barok. Hij werd als een revolutionair beschouwd, ondanks het feit dat er maar één enkel werk uit 1626 van hem bewaard is gebleven, waaruit deze ochtend een deel zal worden gespeeld. Cabanilles Barberà kan als de bekendste Valenciaanse componist van de 17e eeuw beschouwd worden. De door de componisten geschreven tiento is een typisch Spaanse vorm die een combinatie is van het Ricercare en van de Toccata. Verder staat op het programma Tonal Round V van Leo de Vries, die dit jaar zijn 90ste verjaardag zal vieren.

Brendan Faegre over Novel Forces
Novel Forces is a work for the 31-tone microtonal Fokker organ, housed in the small hall of the Muziekgebouw in Amsterdam. It attempts to breath contemporary life into the tonal structures of the late Baroque period through the new chords and scales available in the Fokker organ’s unique temperament. It takes a particularly resonant chord from the harmonic series as a fresh “major chord” and then uses this chord within the hierarchies and gravitational forces of traditional tonality.
Harmony provides the momentum behind the work, while various grooves and textures are used to explore this new tonal space. Whatever your chosen analogy may be for the experience of the piece as a whole—physical tension and release, an archetypal story, sex, evolution, departure and homecoming—enjoy the journey.
[For those interested in the gritty tuning details, this tonality was formed by taking 31-TET approximations of harmonics 8, 9, 10, 11, and 12 as the basic sonority, adding its transposition up and down a perfect fifth to create a master scale, and modulating this scale to various transpositions based on common-tones. In addition to the “major” mode of the scale in which the piece begins, a minor mode is also established, as another analogy to the late Baroque tonal system.]
