The British label Touch is one of the most respected and influential labels in the ambient, experimental music and sound art. Celebrated for their fantastic and new sound, artistic integrity and graphic design, Touch was at the cradle of several musicians who were previously presented at the relatively new series of the Muziekgebouw: The Rest is Noise. Touch-founder Mike Harding presents this evening some important artists of the moment: Philip Jeck, Thomas Ankersmit and last but not least, Claire M Singer.
The musical work of performer Claire M Singer has been widely commissioned, exhibited and performed throughout Europe and North America. This includes acoustic and electronic composition, fixed media, multi-media, installations and live electronics. In recent years her work has focused on a mix of organ, ‘cello and electronics with performances.
The Rest Is Noise hosts the Touch Label Night at Muziekgebouw aan ‘t IJ, Amsterdam on Monday, 9 November. Artists of the moment Philip Jeck and Thomas Ankersmit will be performing alongside a rare staging of the 31-tone Fokker organ by Claire M Singer. Claire M Singer is a composer and performer from Aberdeenshire, Scotland, currently based in London. Her work encompasses fixed media (stereo and multi-channel), site-specific, multimedia, live electronics, and collaborative projects. In 2005, The Final Journey, written for the New Noise ensemble, was selected for the opening of the SPNM Promoting New Music concert in London. In 2006, she was chosen for the online Noise Festival and composed an organ and electronics work for the Scottish Sound Festival, which will be released later this year. In 2007, Être Fluide was released on the Ladyfest CD, three of her works were presented at the Tate Modern in London, and her audio/visual work was showcased at The Shunt Vaults in London as well as at the Sonic Arts Expo in Plymouth. Recently, her audio/visual work premiered in New York City, and she composed the music for Brian Pollack’s latest film Armed Ambassadors, which will be released later this year in the USA.
In addition to composition, Claire is also involved in cello and live electronics improvisation, collaborating with various contemporary music ensembles internationally. Recent performances include the Fast and Dirty dance project, a cello and live electronics set at Chez Poulet Gallery in San Francisco, Thainstone Mart for the 24 Fragments closing event funded by the PRS Foundation for New Music and the Wellcome Trust, Dundee Contemporary Arts, and the Flykingen Institute in Stockholm.
Claire has also performed with Marina Rosenfeld’s Sheer Frost Orchestra at the Tate Modern in London and worked with the Her Noise project on Sonic Youth artist Kim Gordon’s Reverse Karaoke at the South London Gallery. In 2007, Claire received the PRS Atom Award for New Music, which funded her travel to San Francisco to develop her work with Max/MSP.
