MicroFest Amsterdam

The Huygens-Fokker Foundation organises the only microtonal festival in the Netherlands, under the name MicroFest Amsterdam. With this initiative, the foundation follows in the footsteps of MicroFest in Los Angeles and UK MicroFest in London. Through a diverse program showcasing the many different forms of microtonality, the festival reaches a wide audience of enthusiastic listeners and those interested in unconventional tunings and microtonal music—music which, as the famous American composer Charles Ives described it, consists of “the notes between the keys of the piano.”
Over the course of its editions, the festival has featured music in 31-tone tuning, 19-tone tuning, 24-tone tuning (quarter-tones), 43-tone tuning, 72-tone tuning, 96-tone tuning, Bohlen-Pierce tuning, meantone temperament, and just intonation. These tuning systems open up entirely new musical and tonal possibilities and provide fresh sounds that can permanently broaden both the listener’s ear and their way of thinking about music. All the more reason to experience this unique and compact festival for microtonal music.

Editions

MicroFest Amsterdam 2025
This new edition of MicroFest Amsterdam opens in the morning with two perfectly tuned microtonal instruments: the 31-tone guitar and the 31-tone organ, featuring works by René Uijlenhoet and Aart Strootman. The afternoon concert pays tribute to Mexican composer, violinist, and microtonal thinker Julián Carrillo—born 150 years ago—who divided the octave into 96 microtones. This program features Carrillo’s own perfectly matched instruments: the 96-tone Carrillo piano and Carrillo harp. Finally, the evening concert presents a dazzling performance by the eight-piece ensemble The Hallucinating Harmonists, where elements of jazz and fusion are heard in a refreshingly disorienting new way. Between the main concerts, there will also be a free lecture and an additional performance.

For the second time, the Huygens-Fokker Foundation is organising a festival for microtonal music in Amsterdam, titled MicroFest Amsterdam 2015. A central theme running through the programs of this edition is the 31-tone music of the Italian composer Nicola Vicentino, a pioneer in the renewal of meantone temperament. His four enharmonic madrigals from 1555 were first published in modern notation in 1990 in the series Corpus Microtonale (The Diapason Press, Utrecht), made possible through the financial support of the Huygens-Fokker Foundation. Now, 460 years later, this one-day festival offers a wonderful opportunity to present his forward-looking music to today’s audiences.
