In the summer of 2018, the Huygens-Fokker Foundation had four high-quality, identical QSC speakers installed just above the Fokker organ in the Kleine Zaal of the Muziekgebouw in Amsterdam. This digital enhancement makes it possible to supplement the organ with additional organ stops, allowing music from other stylistic periods (1700–1950) to be performed on the unique 31-tone organ. In this way, a long-cherished wish will finally be fulfilled: performing music from the Romantic period, which requires an organ with many more stops. Through a perfect fusion of acoustic and digital sounds, the speakers create a larger and more versatile instrument without detracting from the original organ. In this manner, the project opens the door to surprising historical interpretations as well as innovative expansions with electronic music. By combining the acoustic pipe organ with a virtual organ, the Fokker organ can, if desired, develop into a hybrid instrument that can be deployed in a concert programme in exceptional cases.
