But in Amsterdam, there is an organ so unique that music composed specifically for it cannot be performed anywhere else. This is because it has not twelve, but 31 tones per octave. On Sunday 17 May, following an extensive restoration and renovation, the organ will be put back into use. The instrument is also known as the Fokker organ, named after the physicist Adriaan Fokker. He had it built in 1950, basing its theoretical foundation on a treatise by Christiaan Huygens (1629\u20131695), in which Huygens discussed the problems involved in tuning instruments. According to Huygens, to produce truly pure thirds and fifths, the octave is best divided into 31 tones.
