Huygens\u2019 most relevant work in relation to music, Le Cycle Harmonique (1691), is a concise mathematical treatise in which he named the 31-tone system as the most excellent of all tunings. In his final work Cosmotheoros, completed in early 1695, Huygens speculated, among other things, about life on other planets. According to Huygens, there existed life there similar to that on Earth. His Cosmotheoros could therefore be seen as an early form of science fiction. In this work Christiaan Huygens describes his musical discoveries in quite a different way: the 31-tone tuning is so universal that it must undoubtedly also exist elsewhere in the universe. Plenty of intriguing material for conversation, enough to invite Christiaan Huygens himself to give an explanation at the Muziekgebouw. Guitarist Melle Weijters will be accompanied in this concert by regular Fokker organist Ere Lievonen and a very special mystery guest: none other than Christiaan Huygens!
